Artist in Residence - Behind the Scenes with Angela Maritz.
Beneath the brushstrokes: creating on location at The Peninsula All-Suite Hotel.
Hi, I’m Angela - I believe that art is so much more than simply the cherry on the cake in the design scheme.
Art, just like holidays, gives us experiences.
They offer us moments that stay with us — and they become even more meaningful when we connect with the heart of where they come from.
It’s therefore an absolute privilege to have created the artwork in this hotel suite and to share the themes, thoughts, and my intention with you.
Adding an Artistic Flair to the Peninsula
Here at The Peninsula…
We pride ourselves on pushing boundaries. And when it comes to refurbishments and upgrades, there’s no exception. Each year, 20% of our suites undergo a soft refurbishment process that incorporates a different scheme.
In 2024 we made the exciting decision to push this theme even further by incorporating original paintings on our walls and having South African artist Angela Maritz interpret the theme into artworks for us.
For a set period each year Angela becomes our Artist in Residence.

The Theme, Fynbos
The Outside, Inside
South Africa’s diverse and indigenous fynbos flora incorporates rich earthy colours and textures.
Think hues of pinks, purples, oranges, yellows, browns, and greens.
As The Peninsula is surrounded by local fynbos, the exterior will quite literally bring the outside in.
Growing up in South Africa, Angela draws her inspiration from our country’s contrasting landscapes, wildlife, and rainbow of cultures.
“Fynbos represents life and growth, encapsulating our resilience and ability to adapt and evolve.”

Journal Entry 1 - 2024 - The Wild Abundance Of It All..
I have never been an artist who finds joy in replicating a mirror of what I see—especially when it comes to nature. Nature perfects it already.
I’m more interested in interpreting it in a way that evokes the feelings we experience when we’re immersed in it.
As you look at this series of artworks, take note of the colours—all found in nature and inspired by the local fynbos, including the blue African sky.
I wanted these paintings to carry a sense of the wild and untamed—after all, this is Africa.
I wanted them to express a feeling of abundance, in contrast to what the world so often projects onto us. Nature, after all, provides that.
And above all, I wanted these paintings to uplift you in the same way that creating them uplifts me.

The Theme - Bo-Kaap
A Tribute To Heritage & Vibrancy
Inspired by the historic Bo-Kaap neighbourhood in Cape Town, this design theme captures the essence of a rich cultural heritage.
Known for its vividly coloured houses, cobblestone streets, and deep-rooted Cape Malay traditions, Bo-Kaap is one of the city’s oldest residential areas. Its history dates back to the 18th century, when enslaved people from Southeast Asia (notably Indonesia and Malaysia) were brought to the Cape by Dutch colonists. Over time, the neighbourhood evolved into a unique fusion of Malay, African, and European influences, reflected in its Cape Dutch and Georgian architecture.
The Bo-Kaap design theme is a celebration of history, culture, and bold self-expression. Defined by vibrant colours, handcrafted elements, and a warm, inviting atmosphere, it brings a lively yet deeply meaningful aesthetic to our refurbishment project. By incorporating this iconic style, we are not only revitalising our spaces but also paying homage to a community that has played a significant role in shaping Cape Town’s diverse identity.
Journal Entry 1 - 2025 - Greetings from Room 201
It’s an absolute delight to be creating another series of artwork for this year’s refurbishment.
Last year, I explored the beauty of Fynbos, our unique local flora, but this year’s theme takes on a whole new energy – Bo-Kaap.
As one of Cape Town’s most vibrant and historic neighbourhoods, it’s a place bursting with colour, culture, and rich heritage – a must-visit for anyone looking to experience the soul of the city.
A huge thank you to Yusuf and his incredible maintenance team, who have transformed the third bedroom of my suite into a fully functional art studio.
Here, I get to “eat an elephant” under Lion’s Head – a nod to both the breathtaking mountain view from my window and the famous proverb, often quoted by Desmond Tutu: “You eat an elephant one bite at a time.” A reminder that challenges, no matter how big, are best tackled step by step.
For me, painting itself isn’t the challenge. Rather, like many of us, it’s about overcoming mindset barriers. Trusting the process, pushing through self-doubt, and embracing creativity is essential to producing work that is truly unique.
And then, there’s colour - one of the most powerful tools in my art.
I love it! I use it to celebrate, uplift, and inspire, much like the way colour is embedded in Bo-Kaap’s landscape, its vibrant culture, its bold flavours, and the energy of the Kaapse Klopse Festival.
My goal? To create strong, confident, joyful pieces. Art that makes you feel like that, live like that, and love like that.

Journal Entry 2 - 2025 - When thinking further about this theme…
I didn't just want to simply paint Bo-Kaap’s colourful houses as it’s the people, their culture, that give Bo-Kaap its vibrancy.
My first stop, a walking tour around Bo-Kaap, adding more history to what I already knew of the area while my 2nd stop was Faezaa’s Tea Garden, for a cooking lesson, as food is always at the heart of one’s culture…
I came away with enough inspiration to feed a crowd but also to paint the abstracted food series you see within this series and the landscapes.
Depicting the Kaapse Klopse, Cape Town Minstrel Carnival that happens traditionally on the 2nd of January was also a must and a further tribute.
Many of the traditional songs were familiar to me. As a child I learnt the months of the year to the tune of January, February, March and my grandmother and mothers voice sang in my ears as my own memories flooded back while painting to their melodious tunes.
